Writers from Across the U.S.
In this resort-style residency, we offer one-week residencies for writers from across the United States. Located in central Coachella Valley in Palm Desert, CA--near Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs--writers can sit by our saline pool and work on new poems, start a new chapter, construct a manuscript or revise work. All weekly residents arrive on a Friday and depart the following Saturday. As of 2024, 90% our visiting writers are culled from our annual contest, The Desert Rat Poetry Prize, to provide writers with housing & meals for seven days while they work on a writing project and explore Coachella Valley. Ideal candidates can function independently, bring a curiosity about the desert, and appreciate diverse cultures. Most residencies take place during the summer months when, historically, temperatures have reached up to one hundred and twenty degrees (though that is not the norm).
Residents are responsible for their own travel to and from Palm Desert, CA. Renting a car is highly suggested. We provide a well-stocked fridge for the week’s meals. The house is located in the quiet suburban neighborhood known as Deep Canyon. Please do not send self-nominations.
